If you have been in the gaming industry for any number of years you have heard of the game Portal. Portal 2 is widely considered one of the best games ever made, and if you have a PC, you should pick it up! People have been clamoring for a sequel for years, and though this is not the Portal sequel people had in mind, Bridge Constructor Portal is a fantastic, fun, puzzle game, using the Portal license.
GLaDOS returns to be your guide in this puzzle game. Just like in Portal she is witty, and often hilarious, and a joy to have back in this game. At its heart this is a bridge building game, and you will be familiar if you have played World of Goo, or any other title in the Bridge Constructor series. You will be building platforms for test vehicles inside the Aperture Science facility. There is a total of sixty test chambers that will test your bridge making skills.
Being a fan of the Portal series helps you appreciate the game even more. From GLaDOS, to the portals you must put your car through, the sound effects, dialogue and even the test chambers, all scream Portal. It is clear they worked with the Portal team to get all these little details down. There are even familiar elements from the PC game like cubes, sentry turrets, and aerial faith plates to name a few. The look and feel of the game are unmistakably Portal.
The test chambers or levels start out easy enough and build to a crazy, time-consuming difficulty. You are not timed, so you have as long as you need to play around and figure it out. GLaDOS does a great job of introducing new game mechanics and the basics of the bridge building. It has a great difficulty curve that never feels overwhelming. There is also a great help in the menu, called best practices. I remember going to that resource often in my play through.
Often it is hilarious to test your creations out and watch the vehicle crash into acid, or fly off a bridge. There were many times that a poor test subject would fly out and meet their demise. My bridges would collapse, and send the car crashing down. Another challenge is after you successfully get one car across your bridge, you can’t move on to another level, or send a convoy of cars to really stress test your bridges. There were several times where one car barely made it, but sending multiple destroyed my creation.
Overall this is a difficult, but very enjoyable puzzle game. On iOS, it plays well, though an iPhone you are going to have to zoom in a lot, so it’s better on an iPad. Another thing is that it does control well, but you do have to zoom in to really get precise. If you enjoyed any other title in the Bridge Constructor, love Portal, or enjoy a great puzzle game, look no further than Bridge Constructor Portal. One more thing, it is half the price of the PC version, so iOS users are in for a cheaper experience, but the same full game.
Game Score: 84% Great!
