Hands on with Achtung! Cthulhu: Tactics
Thank you, Plan of Attack, for giving me a review copy to look at this game!
Achtung! Cthulhu: Tactics is a by the book strategy RPG. The story has a unique twist in that you are playing an alternate take on World War II. In this story the Nazi’s took their occult practices and were successful in making Lovecraftian items. You will have a crew that you take with you that you deck out with different skills, weapons and equipment as you level up and progress through the story. There are a variety of main story missions and some side missions to take on as well.
I think it’s unique that you only play as this set of four characters. Lots of times in RPG’s or even strategy games you usually fill out your party by choosing them from a pool of different characters. This restraint in making this choice makes the game feel more personal, as you are focused only on your squad and your mission.
The few missions I have played take place in a forest area. It seems as you progress you will get to enemy camps and go to a variety of environments. The graphics look fine, though the forest area seems to feel the same. The sound is great, and I really enjoy the enemy design so far.
Gameplay is pretty much your standard fair, and that is good. The action is great and reminds me of XCOM. Some unique things the game does is you will have a stress meter, and if it fills your solider will do something randomly because he is tense. At the end of your turn, you have to shift where your soldiers are looking. This will expose hidden enemies so you can see them. Once an enemy is exposed, they are easier to target.
With the few hours I have played, this seems like a solid RPG, turn based, strategy game. If you are fan of XCOM, this has a fun story and good gameplay to back it up. I would recommend you pick this up from the eShop today!
I have been playing games since I was a boy and now am a 33 year old game journalist. Welcome to my site!
