Octahedron: Transfixed Edition Hands On
Octahedron: Transfixed Edition is a fantastic platformer published by Square Enix. If you are into great video game music, awesome retro looking graphics or platforming games, just buy this game. I guarantee you will fall in love with this challenging platformer.
I am only still in the first world, but this game checks all my boxes for a great platformer. It has amazing 80s retro graphics. The presentation and polish that went into this platformer is just breathtaking. Last year I praised Celeste for having my favorite game soundtrack and this year so far, Octahedron is taking that prize. It has an amazing electronic soundtrack you do not want to miss. I was wearing my headphones and with the look of the game it meshes together.
As far as gameplay is concerned your goal is to make it to the end of each level. There will be many platforming challenges to get there. There are also flowers to collect and 8 different colored triangles to collect. You can break these lights and they will give you flowers after you destroy them. There are many goals in each level, such as collecting everything, make only a certain number of platforms (I will explain) to not dying on a level, to completing a level in a certain amount of time. There are hours of gameplay if you want to perfect a level.
The platforming is unique: not just because of its style, music, but gameplay. You can jump and then hit R and another platform will appear underneath your feet. You can only do this twice. Hence one goal is to only create a certain number of platforms to get that special medal. Otherwise you have unlimited uses, yet only two at a time. Once you trigger a platform, you can travel with it for a second or two, which helps you reach higher places or travel further.
With the couple hours I have put into this I heartily recommend you pick this game up. It provides a serious challenge, so it is not for the faint of heart.
I have been playing games since I was a boy and now am a 33 year old game journalist. Welcome to my site!
